How To Wind A Newborn? [Follow These Steps]

When you first bring your new baby home, there are many things that the two of you will need to learn.

The most important thing is how to care for your newborn and one of those tasks is maintaining their temperature.

One way to do this it by wrapping them in a warm blanket until they have grown enough to regulate their own body temperature. This means learning how to wind a newborn so that they stay nice and cozy, but not overheated or cold!

What is winding?

A baby’s body has a certain amount of pressure that constrains it. When it cries, the mother will pick up the baby and press on the belly to let out some gas, this is called winding a baby.

We all think that babies can’t roll over or move around very well at first. In reality, they have almost every ability as an adult only their muscles aren’t strong enough yet.

Why do I need to wind my baby?

As part of the normal digestive process, wind is produced by all babies. This can be before, during or after a feed. Your baby’s immature digestive system is not able to manage this normal buildup of wind, so it needs help to be released from the body.

The most common ways that babies expel this gas are through burps and hiccups, passing wind through their anus (soiling themselves), crying and ‘catching’ the wind with their hands (bringing them to their face as they pass it).

How to wind a newborn?

A simple winding session should take between 5-10 minutes, but sometimes it can take ages.

The first thing to remember is that you are dealing with a baby who doesn’t understand what this ‘winding’ thing is all about and who probably has no idea why he/she is being picked up in the middle of the night, when they’re fast asleep.

A newborn’s wind can cause a whole lot of problems for both parents and their baby. Your little bundle might be very restless during the day or they may cry nonstop.

Their bowel movements might change from runny to really hard which leads onto constipation and possibly vomiting from straining too much.

Concentrate on trying to make your newborn’s life as comfortable as possible for themselves and for you.

How long should I wind my baby for?

Usually about 15 minutes. Watch for signs of tiring, then put baby down or change to a different position.

If you are co-sleeping with your baby, try rolling the swaddle up over just one arm at a time before bedtime so that your baby doesn’t wake himself up when he flails his arms around in search of the lost freedom.

You can either gradually cut back on how much is covered until you have removed the wrap completely, or if you trust your baby not to startle himself awake with two free arms, you may wish to leave them loose overnight from the beginning.

Tips on how to make it easier to wind your baby

1) Use a soft toy to put on the stomach, add some weight and add some stimulation. Make sure you choose a light toy if your baby is still in her early days. Since she won’t be able to turn around on the belly yet, the toy would make it more comfortable for her compared to sleeping without anything.

2) Sometimes it could get hot and stuffy under all that quilt and bedsheet while we were pregnant. To cool down and breathe better, try putting an electric fan facing the feet of the bed. It will blow onto your tummy which is also nice during pregnancy time if you feel warm while sleeping at night; just cover yourself with a thin blanket so it won’t blow onto the baby.

3) Use a bolster to support your belly and back as you sleep during pregnancy. It might feel uncomfortable to lie on your side for some women because of the additional weight gain, so sleeping in a straight stomach position would help reduce those aches and pains. Try different positions and find out what seems comfortable and relaxing for you.

4) Make sure that your big toe is placed at the centre of the bed, this will prevent ankle swelling while you sleep. Not only it helps with blood circulation, but also can keep you from snoring !

5) Always make sure that there’s enough space around your tummy for free movement. In other words, don’t let it get stuck under the bed, or you might feel uncomfortable and even experience body pains.

6) Expect some good traffic on your belly – your baby would twist and turn her way through there during pregnancy! It’s normal for it to be a little sore here and there… so don’t forget to pamper yourself sometimes too.

7) Keeping calm will help speed up recovery after pregnancy – so try making time to relax every day with a cup of chamomile tea before going to sleep. The coolness from the cup will help reduce swelling in hands and ankles as well as any other body parts that feel hot and swollen during this period of time.
